Invited for interview at Bedford Borough Council for the position of Planning Policy GIS & Information Officer, I produced the interactive map below to present to my interviewers, it displays details about Controlled Parking Zones (CPZ) and allotments in Bedford City Centre.
Using the well known QGIS opensource GIS, I created the Parking Zone polygons from Bedford Borough Council’s PDFs, using the roadline as the approximate boundary of each zone. Using Openstreet Map as a background, with detailed text in a polygon’s attribute table, clicking on a polygon, produces a popup containing that text . Links can also be placed in a popup to other documents or web addresses.
The QGIS composition can then be displayed and exported using the very capable qgis2web plugin. The plugin creates a folder structure that can be uploaded online to enable interactive mobile maps. For proof of concept projects, it enables a quick and cheap solution to display spatial data in a web map.
