Maps in Layers - Spreading Layers of Information

Making maps in 'layers' presents a web mapping developer with the option to create individual maps or maps containing several data sets. Each layer can be styled (what map makers refer to as Symbology), individually displaying their legends, as selected by the user.

With Google unveiling a completely revamped Maps, now available to all, creating your own maps has become easier than ever. You can create private and public maps, share the maps with specific individuals, add descriptions to locations, and choose from several map styles and appearances.

Organise Maps With layers of Data

Layers can be used to organize your places, lines, and shapes and control the ways you see different kinds of information. For example, you can color-code restaurants based on type of food on one layer and add your friendsí addresses on another layer to easily see what food is available near your friends.

The image below describes a map with 7 data layers depicting transport networks, places of interest, sightseeing or otherwise. Boundaries are overlaid, natural features of hydrography, a digital elevation map, land useage and finally a base map.

Each layer must be geolocated exactly with its upper and lower counterpart, all managed and stored as map layers on geospatially precise servers. Examples of Gesoserver based maps are displayed on the GeoServer menu tab.
